What it is

A private farm-wide sensor and positioning network designed to connect livestock, infrastructure and environmental sensors across rural environments.

HerdHalo starts from the position that a farm should own its coverage. Rather than fitting each device with its own long-range radio and its own subscription, the holding gets one network — installed once, extended with anchors, and shared by everything on it.

The stack

What sits in the system.

  1. Gateway

Sits at the yard where power and backhaul exist. Terminates the private network, holds state when the uplink drops, and forwards events when it returns.

  2. Mesh anchors

Solar or mains, mounted on posts and buildings. They extend the network along tracks, gateways and watercourses, and act as the reference geometry for positioning.

  3. Field devices

Collars, gate sensors, trough level, environmental nodes. Low duty cycle, long service intervals, and designed for handling rather than for a bench.

  4. Edge processing

Behaviour and threshold logic runs on the device or the nearest anchor, so the network carries decisions rather than raw sensor traffic.

Open questions

What we are actually working out.

Stated as questions rather than claims. When we have answers worth publishing, we will publish them with the working shown.

  • How far can a multi-hop network usefully reach across folded ground?

  • What is the smallest position fix that still changes a farming decision?

  • How long can a collar run before somebody has to catch the animal again?
