The site

Why this environment is hard.

A working farm is a radio environment nobody designed. Stone barns, wet hedgerows, folded ground, long distances and a mains supply that stops at the yard. Mobile coverage was planned around roads and villages, not the far side of the hill.

  • Coverage

    Terrain and weather decide the link, not a tariff. A parcel that carries all summer can drop out once the ground is wet and the stock have moved into the bottom of the valley.

  • Power

    Anything on an animal or a gate runs from a cell or a small panel. The duty cycle sets what the product can do, not the processor.

  • Distance

    Holdings run to kilometres, and no single base station sees the whole of one. A topology that needs every device within earshot of one mast will not survive its first winter.

  • Handling

    Hardware gets kicked, rubbed on posts, jet-washed and frozen. Ingress protection and mechanical design are radio decisions too — the enclosure is part of the antenna.

  1. Where is the herd?

    Which parcel, which gate, which end of the valley.

    Positioning engine

    Anchors on posts and buildings are the reference geometry. A collar ranges against them and resolves to a parcel, a gate or a trough without running GNSS all day, and reports the fix with a confidence figure.

  2. What is each animal doing?

    Grazing, ruminating, calving — or still for too long.

    Sensing & edge ML

    The collar classifies grazing, ruminating, calving and still-for-too-long on the device, from its inertial sensor. The network carries the event — one animal, one state, one time — not the accelerometer trace.

  3. How does data get off the hill?

    Hop by hop, over ground the farm owns. No mast, no subscription.

    Private DECT NR+ radio

    Collars talk to the nearest anchor, anchors relay hop by hop along the tracks and watercourses stock actually use, and the yard gateway holds events through a dropped uplink. The spectrum is licence-free, so coverage is a property of the holding, not a subscription.

Mesh anchor

Solar or mains on a post. Extends the network along the routes stock use, and is the fixed reference the positioning engine ranges against.

Sits where power and backhaul exist. Terminates the mesh, solves positions and holds the day's events through an outage.

In practice

What the system does here.

  1. Own the network

    Coverage is a property of the holding. Anchors along the tracks stock use extend it, and no part of the system depends on a carrier, a mast or a monthly bill.

  2. Locate before you transmit

    Which parcel an animal is in is worth more than a stream of raw sensor values, and costs a fraction of the airtime. The fix is the product; the trace stays on the device.

  3. Decide at the edge

    Behaviour classification runs on the collar. The network carries events and positions, not waveforms — which is what makes a battery budget possible on an animal.
